Churassco's

2055 Westheimer
713.527.8300

It's been a long time since I've written. The storm interrupted the already fragile habit. So, to begin the habit anew, let's talk about one of my favorite Houston restaurants... Churrasco's. This Houston institution is run by foode philanthropist Michael Cordua.

Churrasco's serves South American food and specializes in a charcoal grilled tenderloin slathered with a chimichurri sauce. It's expensive ($25-$45) and outrageously good. The meat is tender and moist and full of flavor. But just because they serve a mean tenderloin doesn't mean they skimp on the seafood. In fact, I come here for the seafood.

I got the Opereta ($24) a few days ago. It comes with crab claws, two kinds of fish, scallops and grilled shrimp. All of this food is perfectly cooked and comes with grilled vegetable. The renovation at the Churrasco's means that this Houston institution has high style, patio dining and private rooms for large crowds. I don't ever mind waiting an hour for a table here--especially with a nice cocktail.

End your meal here with their world-famous tres leches. You can't be disappointed.

Actually we ate there on Sunday night for the first time. My aunt, sister, and myself ordered the Helena, the greek salad with grilled shrimp on it. We all were suffering from severe diarrhea, nausea, and chills the next day. The food was not good. The flan dessert was the only thing worth paying for.

I have always enjoyed Churrascos. From the plantain chip appetizer to the desserts, you cannot go wrong. Try the trio of ceviches - It's wonderful as an appetizer or a main course. Even if you are on a budget, there are very creative main courses that are rich in flavor. I tried the chicken breast coated with plantains - It comes with two chicken breasts and can be shared easily. Price $12.00! The flan here is among the best in Houston.... One tip if you go to the Westheimer/Gessner location - Michael Corduas Amazon Grill is across the street. Some of the entrees at Amazon Grill are the same as Churrascos only they cost less. According to staff, items like the Cevichi are made at Churrascos and then taken over to Amazon Grill... Brilliant concept and wonderful secret for the budget minded. (Amazon Grill offers free plantain chips and self-serve salad with every meal. Also, we recommend going during happy hour when a selection of free appetizers are put out)

My husband and I along with a group from our neighborhood eat at Churassco's for the wine dinner the first Monday of each month. We have been doing this for about two years and I must say the last couple of times have been very disappointing. The service and food have gone downhill and we have decided if it doesn't improve, we will find another place for our monthly gathering. To be fair, we will give Churassco's a few more times before we make a final decision to go elsewhere.

You need to go and check out the Amazon Grill in Houston Texas on Kirby Dr.

Robert the Manager and his Team is outstanding!!

If you haven't experienced the Amazon Grill then you need to stop what you're doing and head on over. The food is out of this world, and you'll love the prices!! You must try for desert the tres leches, or the smores. The service is first-rate, and fast.
